How should Jewish educators respond to the fallout over October 7th? CJPE Circle of Fellows discussion.

Updated: 3 days ago

In the aftermath of October 7th, Jewish educators face significant challenges. Recently, the CJPE Circle of Fellows gathered to address the critical question: How should Jewish educators respond to the fallout over October 7th?

The discussion focused on the pressing issues and necessary strategies to support students and communities during this time.

Challenges

Educators are tasked with reinforcing a sense of Jewish collective belonging while navigating diverse perspectives within their Jewish communities. This led to discussions on the need for inclusive educational frameworks that honor pluralism and foster unity.  These frameworks need to recognize the emotional and psychological impact on students and the broader community of October 7th and the ensuing events. The Fellows emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces for expression and healing, recognizing that the trauma of such events affects people of all ages and ideological perspectives.

Strategic Response: Innovative Peoplehood-Driven Engagement

From the Fellows' discussion emerged a strategic response. Innovative Peoplehood-driven engagement strategies are crucial for navigating deep disagreements and polarization with the goal of mutual caring between Jews. Participants emphasized the importance of non-dialogic engagement, through music and song, intentional use of silence, and communal service, to create spaces for empathy, meaningful interaction, and understanding. Engagement that focuses on being in the presence of other Jews lays the basis for more intensive verbal engagement on core issues that are also potentially divisive.
